The Weekly Reset: How a Quick Routine Can Save Time Later

Sometimes, Mondays are just the worst. Maybe you didn’t have as productive as a weekend as you planned. Maybe you had a bad weekend altogether. Spending a few minutes with a “Weekly Reset” routine can work wonders for both your time and state of mind.

My Weekly Reset is my version of pushing the reset button. It helps me prepare for the week by getting my head in the game, saving some time in the mornings (and get a few extra minutes of sleep while I’m at it), and handling some of the chores that can easily be neglected without some regular attention.

It’s not just about getting things ready and cleaning. For me, this routine is a meditation of sorts. I am starting my week clean, and refreshed, and in the zone. I save a lot of time. The weeks I don’t do this routine (nobody is perfect), I can feel the difference. I’m just a little more frazzled. And while any one of these tasks can be done on any night, there is something about doing all of them in one batch that does wonders.

I consider Sunday to be the start of my week, so I try to do my Weekly Reset on Saturday evenings. That being said, if I don’t get to it on Saturday, Sunday works fine. I’m more concerned to get it done before the work week starts.

#1 — Put away clean clothes

Confession: I am terrible at putting away clean clothes. I don’t know why, but sheesh. As I type this, there is a basket waiting for me by the dryer. I have learned if I don’t put clothes away on Saturday or Sunday nights, I will definitely leave them for the week. By adding it to my Weekly Reset, I do better at putting them away.

#2 — Change Your Linens

Ain’t nothing like fresh sheets and towels. I always sleep better on fresh out the dryer sheets (who doesn’t?) so doing this as part of my Weekly Reset helps me get a good night’s rest before the work week starts.

#3 — Cleaning

Saturday or Sunday nights are a good time to spend a few minutes to deep-clean and sanitize the things you carry with you that are germ magnets. I like to do my sunglasses and headphones; a good, thorough deep-clean once a week extends their lives. Plus, shiny sunglasses makes me feel like Meryl Streep in the Devil Wears Prada when she gets off the elevator.

If you’re like me and not very diligent about thoroughly cleaning your make-up brushes every day, this is a good time to tackle those too. A good cleaning once a week is better for your skin, and reduces the urge to vomit when you clean them for the first time in forever and see all the crap that comes off them.

#4 — Odds & Ends

Lastly, I tackle anything that could make my life easier during the week. Counting out my medications and vitamins into a weekly pill dispenser makes my life much easier, so I do that. I also refill any soap dispensers and my shampoo and conditioner bottles. Clear out your email inbox.

My Weekly Reset routine takes but a half hour. It’s not so much about prepping for the week. This is about shaking off the dust of anything and starting your week refreshed and ready to dominate the world.
